How to Prep for Your Sunset Family Photos with Little Kids

Sunset family photos are simply magical. The golden light, the peaceful landscape – it’s the perfect setting to capture those precious family moments. However, I know many mums worry about keeping their little ones up late enough for that perfect shot. Here are some tried-and-true tips to help you get ready for your sunset family photo session, and to get through them without a hitch.

1. Adjust Bedtime Gradually

If your child usually gets to bed before sunset, consider shifting their bedtime a bit later in the days leading up to your session. A gradual shift can help them adjust to staying up later without feeling cranky. Similarly, on the day of the shoot, try to push their nap time a bit later. A well-rested child is a happy child!

2. Full Tummies, Happy Kids

We all know that hunger can lead to meltdowns. (It does for me, anyway!). Make sure everyone has a good meal a couple of hours before the session. It’s also a great idea to pack some non-messy snacks like apple slices, as well as bottled water (preferably with a straw). That way, you can keep the hunger pains at bay without worrying about stains on those cute outfits. But, to be honest, kids always have so much fun and adventure among the long grass and picking wildflowers, hunger is usually very far from their thoughts.

3. Keep Calm and Relaxed.

Your energy sets the tone, always. If you’re stressed or frazzled, your little ones will pick up on it. Instead, focus on staying calm. Create a relaxing environment before the session – maybe give your child a nice long bath, read them their favorite story, or sing their favourite songs. Speak about me, your photographer, so when you arrive they feel like they know me a little more.

4. Dress for the Season and the Weather

Comfort is key when it comes to kids’ outfits. If it’s warm, keep them cool with light fabrics. If it’s chilly, make sure they’re rugged up appropriately. Layering is your best friend here – think leggings under pants, singlets and long-sleeve shirts, and dresses and cozy beanies to keep little ears warm. Warm socks and boots in the winter and canvas shoes are great through the summer. And if you really can't leave the house without that Emma Wiggle Tutu - bring it and it'll be the fabulous last photo ;)

5. Choose a Fun-Focused Photographer

The right photographer can make all the difference. A play-based, fun-loving photographer (hint: that’s me!) will have plenty of tricks up their sleeve to keep your kids engaged and smiling. We’ll play games, tell jokes, and create a fun atmosphere where your children will be having so much fun, they won’t want the session to end. (and most times they really don't!).

Kids will be kids - I have 4 of them, I know how they roll! Embrace the mood they're in. If they are tired, it'll make for beautiful, intimate images. I don't want them looking and smiling at the camera the whole time, so don't force them. Be silly, make them laugh and giggle and embrace the beautiful hour with your loved ones.
