Most mums tell me right away:
“My kids won’t sit still for photos.”
And honestly? Perfect. Because I don’t want them to.
I’m Coral, a family photographer based in Scone in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, and I photograph families who want photos that feel like real life. The cuddles, the chaos, the belly laughs, the running, the cheeky grins, the “Mum look at me!” moments.
My sessions are relaxed, playful, and full of connection. No awkward posing. No pressure. And definitely no bribing your child into fake smiles (unless snacks are involved, and snacks are always welcome 🤍😂).
I’ve learned that when kids are allowed to be themselves, that’s when the magic happens.
This post is here to answer some of the most common questions I get from parents looking for a stress-free family photography experience, especially those with little ones.
It’s interview-style so you can imagine me saying it with a coffee in hand and probably a child yelling in the background 😉☕.
What do you want families to feel when they arrive for their session?
I want you to feel like you can exhale.
Like you don’t need to “perform” or have perfect kids or a perfect outfit or a perfect house.
Before your session, I send you all the info you need, what to wear, what to expect, how to prep the kids (without making it weird), and what time will give us the dreamiest light.
So when you arrive?
You can just show up and be together.
My kids never cooperate for photos. What should I do?
Honestly?
That’s great. 😄
Because I don’t want “cooperation”, I want connection.
I want your child to run, explore, laugh, cling to your leg, hide behind Dad, or demand to be carried the whole time. All of that is real. And real is what makes your photos feel like your family.
I’ll guide you gently, but I never force children into poses they hate. We work with their personality, not against it.
What are you looking for when you photograph families?
I’m always looking for the in-between moments.
The ones you don’t plan.
The way your toddler grabs your face with both hands.
The way your little boy leans into you when he’s tired.
The way your daughter looks at you like you’re her whole universe.
I notice connection, movement, light, and emotion.
Not perfection.
What do families love most about working with you?
Most families tell me they didn’t expect it to feel so easy.
They arrive nervous, thinking it’ll be stressful…
And then they leave saying:
“That was actually fun.”
Which is the best compliment ever.
Because I want your session to feel like a memory in itself, not something you survive.
I’ll direct you when you need it, I’ll step back when things are unfolding naturally, and I’ll keep things moving so the kids don’t get bored (because we all know bored kids are basically tiny chaos grenades 😅).
What makes you different from other family photographers in the Hunter Valley?
I think it’s the mix of calm energy + real-life storytelling.
I’m not here for stiff poses and perfect smiles.
I’m here for the love, the laughter, the chaos, and the connection.
I’m also very used to kids who are full of energy. The wild ones. The shy ones. The ones who don’t stop talking. The ones who refuse to look at the camera on principle 😂.
I’ve photographed enough families to know this:
Your kids don’t need to behave perfectly for your photos to be beautiful.
Plus, I have 4 of my own, and I've been a teacher for 20 years. That background in working with kids gives me a little insight into how they work ;)
Where do you photograph family sessions?
One of the best things about living in Scone and the Hunter Valley is the scenery.
We have golden paddocks, open skies, river spots, gum trees, rolling hills, rustic country fences, and the kind of sunset light that makes everything feel soft and warm.
I photograph families around:
- Scone
- Muswellbrook
- Aberdeen
- Murrurundi
- Singleton
- and across the Upper Hunter Valley
- Plus down to Newcastle and Port Stephens.
I also provide a location guide to help you choose somewhere that suits your family, your kids, and the vibe you want.
Some spots are perfect for exploring and running. Some are more quiet and intimate. We choose what feels right for you and your family.
Why do you love golden hour sessions?
Because golden hour is basically Mother Nature’s soft filter ✨
That warm, glowy light makes skin tones look beautiful, gives your photos that dreamy feel, and creates the kind of atmosphere that looks timeless.
It also helps kids stay happy, because we’re usually not battling the midday heat or squinty eyes.
How do you help parents relax during the session?
It starts before the session.
I send you prep guides, tips, outfit advice, and reassurance that your kids don’t need to “perform”.
Then during the session, I remind you constantly:
You’re doing amazing.
This is normal.
We don’t need perfection.
I’ll guide you, but I’ll also let your family be your family.
And if your toddler melts down halfway through?
We pause. We cuddle. We reset. We keep going.
How would you describe your editing and photography style?
Warm, natural, and timeless.
I keep skin tones true, colours soft and cohesive, and I edit in a way that still feels like real life - just the most beautiful version of it.
The goal is for your photos to still feel like you ten years from now.
What three words describe your photos?
Connection. Emotion. Story.
What would you want someone searching for a Scone family photographer to know?
That you don’t need perfect kids, perfect outfits, or a perfect life to deserve beautiful photos.
You just need to show up.
Your children can be loud, shy, silly, wild, clingy, grumpy, all of it.
And I’ll still capture something beautiful, because the love is always there underneath.
Family sessions usually run for around 45–90 minutes, depending on your kids, your location, and how the session unfolds.
We move, we play, we cuddle, we laugh.
And somewhere in the middle of all that, your story gets captured.
What do you hope families take away from their photos?
I want you to feel something when you look at them.
I want you to remember what it felt like to hold them when they were small.
Because one day you’ll realise the last time you picked them up already happened, and you didn’t know it was the last time.
Photos matter because they hold the season you’re living in right now.
The messy, beautiful, exhausting, love-filled season.
And it deserves to be remembered. 🤍
